Voice Setup

MAGK uses Mumble for voice communications during events. Your voice connection is configured automatically when you import your TAK data package, but you can also connect manually using the Mumble desktop client or Mumla on Android.

Connection Methods

Method Platform Setup
ATAK Vx Plugin Android (ATAK) Automatic via data package
Mumla Android (standalone) Manual or QR code
Mumble Desktop Windows / macOS / Linux Manual configuration

Recommended: ATAK Vx Plugin

If you're already using ATAK for your event, the Vx plugin provides the most seamless experience. Voice configuration is included in your data package — no extra setup needed.

Connecting via ATAK Vx Plugin

The ATAK Vx (Voice) plugin connects to the Mumble server directly from within ATAK. When your event organizer enables voice communications, the connection details are bundled into your TAK data package.

Prerequisites

  • ATAK installed with the Vx plugin enabled
  • Your event data package imported (see TAK Client Setup)
  • Event voice communications enabled by your organizer

Steps

  1. Import your TAK data package as described in TAK Client Setup
  2. The Vx plugin auto-configures with the Mumble server address, port, and your credentials
  3. Open the Vx plugin panel in ATAK (voice icon in the toolbar)
  4. Tap Connect — you should see your assigned channel
  5. Use Push-to-Talk (PTT) to transmit

Channel Assignment

The Vx plugin places you directly into your assigned squad channel based on your roster assignment. You'll only hear and be heard by members of your squad unless your organizer has configured broader channel access.

Vx Plugin Settings

If the data package didn't auto-configure the Vx plugin, check these settings:

Setting Location Expected Value
Server Address Vx Plugin → Settings → Server Your event's Mumble hostname
Port Vx Plugin → Settings → Server 64738
Username Vx Plugin → Settings → Identity Your Mumble username (from roster)
Channel Vx Plugin → Settings → Channel Your squad channel path

Connecting via Mumla (Android)

Mumla is a standalone Mumble client for Android. Use it if you don't have ATAK or prefer a dedicated voice app.

QR Code Enrollment

The fastest way to configure Mumla:

  1. Open the MAGK platform on your phone or ask your organizer for your QR code
  2. Navigate to your Profile page or registration confirmation
  3. Scan the QR code with Mumla's Add Server scanner
  4. Mumla auto-fills the server address, port, and username
  5. Enter your password (same as your LDAP/TAK credentials)
  6. Tap Connect

QR Code Always Current

The QR code resolves dynamically — it always reflects your latest channel assignment and server configuration, even if your squad assignment changed after initial registration.

Manual Configuration

  1. Open Mumla
  2. Tap + to add a new server
  3. Enter the connection details:

    Field Value
    Label Your event name
Address Server address from your organizer
    Port 64738
Username Your Mumble username (from registration email or profile)
Password Your LDAP password (same as TAK credentials)
  4. Tap Add

  5. Select the server and tap Connect
  6. Navigate to your assigned channel in the channel list

Connecting via Mumble Desktop

The Mumble desktop client works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Steps

  1. Download and install Mumble from mumble.info
  2. Launch Mumble and complete the audio wizard (recommended for first-time setup)
  3. Go to ServerConnect
  4. Click Add New... and enter:

    Field Value
    Label Your event name
Address Server address from your organizer
    Port 64738
    Username Your Mumble username
  5. Click OK to save the server

  6. Select the server and click Connect
  7. Enter your password when prompted
  8. Navigate to your assigned channel in the channel tree

Certificate Warning

On first connection, Mumble may show a certificate warning if the server uses a self-signed certificate. Click Yes to accept and continue. This is normal for self-signed deployments.

QR Code Enrollment

MAGK generates QR codes containing your complete voice configuration. QR codes are available from:

  • Your registration confirmation email (after roster finalization)
  • Your Profile page on the MAGK platform
  • The kiosk at on-site registration

What the QR Code Contains

Field Description
Server host Mumble server address
Server port Mumble protocol port (default 64738)
Username Your assigned Mumble username
Channel Your assigned channel path
Event name The event you're registered for

No Password in QR Code

For security, the QR code does not contain your password. You'll need to enter it manually when connecting. Your password is the same one used for TAK authentication (provided in your registration confirmation).

Manual Server Configuration

If you don't have a QR code or data package, configure your client manually with these details from your organizer:

Setting Description Default
Host Mumble server address Provided by organizer
Port Mumble protocol port 64738
Username Your Mumble username From registration email or profile page
Password Your authentication password Same as TAK/LDAP credentials
Channel Your assigned channel path e.g., Operation Sunrise/1st Platoon/Alpha

Credentials

Your Mumble username and password are generated during roster finalization. If you haven't received them, contact your event organizer. Do not use your MAGK web login — Mumble uses separate LDAP credentials.

Troubleshooting

Certificate Errors

Issue Solution
"Server certificate not trusted" Accept the certificate on first connection. For ATAK Vx, ensure the data package includes the trust store.
"Certificate verification failed" Your client may have a cached certificate from a previous server. Clear the certificate cache and reconnect.
Vx plugin won't connect (cert error) The Mumble TLS certificate may be missing the server auth extension. Contact your organizer.

One-Way Audio

Issue Solution
You can hear others but they can't hear you Check your microphone permissions. In ATAK, ensure the Vx plugin has microphone access. On Mumla, check Android mic permissions.
Others can hear you but you hear nothing Check your audio output device. Ensure volume is up and not routed to a Bluetooth device.
Audio cuts in and out You may be on a weak network connection. Switch to a stronger WiFi or cellular signal.
Echo or feedback Use headphones/earbuds to prevent speaker audio from being picked up by your microphone.

Connection Issues

Issue Solution
"Connection refused" Verify the server address and port. Ensure the Mumble server is running (ask your organizer).
"Connection timed out" Check your network connection. Port 64738 (TCP and UDP) must be reachable. Try switching networks.
"Wrong password" Verify you're using your Mumble/LDAP credentials (not your web login). Check your registration email for the correct password.
"Server full" The server has reached its user limit. Contact your organizer.
Connected but no channels visible You may not have permission to see restricted channels. Navigate to your assigned channel path.

Audio Quality

For the best voice experience:

  • Use headphones or earbuds to prevent echo
  • Enable Push-to-Talk (PTT) instead of voice activation to reduce background noise
  • Stay on a stable network — voice quality degrades on high-latency or lossy connections
  • Keep your microphone close but not touching your mouth
  • In noisy environments, use a directional microphone or headset with noise cancellation
